Common Digestive Problems and How Gastro-Intestinal Medicines Help
Digestive complaints are among the most common reasons people see a doctor
Acidity, bloating, diarrhoea, and constipation are everyday complaints in Pakistan, often linked to diet, food hygiene, and lifestyle. Most are manageable with the right combination of medicine and simple changes at home.
Acidity and ulcers
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and H2 blockers reduce stomach acid production and are the mainstay of treatment for acidity, gastritis, and peptic ulcers. Antacids provide faster but shorter-lived relief and are useful for occasional symptoms. If acidity symptoms persist for more than two weeks despite over-the-counter treatment, or are accompanied by weight loss or black stools, medical evaluation is important rather than continued self-treatment.
Diarrhoea and rehydration
Oral rehydration salts (ORS) are the single most important treatment for diarrhoea, particularly in children, since dehydration — not the diarrhoea itself — is usually what makes the illness dangerous. Probiotics can help restore healthy gut bacteria, and anti-diarrhoeal medicines are best used only when infection has been ruled out, since they can sometimes prolong certain infections.
Constipation and general gut health
Fibre-based and osmotic laxatives are generally preferred as a first step over stimulant laxatives for regular use. Adequate water intake and physical activity are simple, often-overlooked factors in digestive regularity.
