How to Choose Pure Honey in Pakistan: Labels, Prices and Myths
Pakistan produces some well-known honeys, from Sidr (beri) honey in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to acacia (phulai) and wildflower honeys from Punjab and Sindh. It is also a product that is often diluted with sugar syrup. This guide explains what you can and cannot check yourself, and how to get good value. It is prepared by the Medicine Online team in Hyderabad.
1. Read the label first
A properly packed honey should show:
- The brand and the name and address of the packer
- Net weight (for example 250 g, 500 g or 1 kg)
- A batch or lot number, and a packing and best-before date
- Ingredients: honey only. Words like "honey syrup", "flavoured" or added sugar mean it is not pure honey.
- A tamper-evident seal under or over the cap
Buy from a shop that sells sealed jars from identifiable brands, and keep the receipt.
2. Home "purity tests" do not work
You will often hear that pure honey sinks in water, burns with a flame, stays on your thumb, or does not soak into paper. None of these is a reliable test. Thick sugar syrups pass most of them, and real honey with a little more moisture can fail them. The only dependable checks are laboratory tests for moisture, sugar profile and markers of added syrup, which reputable packers run on their batches.
3. Crystallised honey is not fake
Natural honey is a concentrated mix of sugars, and in cool weather the glucose can form crystals, making it thick or grainy. Some honeys crystallise within weeks. This is normal. To make it runny again, stand the closed jar in warm (not boiling) water. Avoid heating honey on the stove or microwaving plastic jars.
4. Colour and taste depend on the flowers
Light, mild honeys often come from acacia or citrus blossom; darker, stronger honeys from Sidr (beri), wildflowers or forest sources. Colour alone does not tell you whether honey is pure; it tells you about the flowers the bees visited.
5. Compare the price per kilogram
Small jars are convenient but usually cost more per kilogram. Divide the price by the weight to compare fairly. For example, at Medicine Online the Mashal Foods 1 kg jar costs less per kilogram than the 500 g and 250 g jars. An unusually cheap "pure" honey is a warning sign, because real honey costs a lot to produce.

Using honey sensibly
- Use it in place of sugar in tea, qehwa, warm water with lemon, yoghurt and baking.
- Never give honey to babies under 12 months old, because of the risk of infant botulism.
- Honey is still sugar. People with diabetes should count it as part of their carbohydrates; see our diabetes guide.
- Store it closed at room temperature, away from sunlight, and use a dry spoon.
Frequently asked questions
What is the price of pure honey in Pakistan?
Prices vary by flower source, brand and jar size. Sidr (beri) honey is usually the most expensive. Compare the price per kilogram, not just the jar price.
How can I check if honey is pure at home?
You cannot reliably. Water, flame, thumb and paper tests are myths. Choose sealed jars from identifiable brands with full labelling, and buy from a trusted seller.
Why did my honey turn white and solid?
It has crystallised, which is natural. Warm the closed jar in warm water to liquefy it.
Does honey expire?
Honey keeps for a very long time if sealed and dry, but follow the best-before date on the jar for the best taste and quality.
