Augmentin BD 457mg/5ml is a twice-daily co-amoxiclav suspension by GlaxoSmithKline, in a 35ml bottle. Each 5ml contains Amoxicillin 400mg and Clavulanic Acid 57mg. This medicine requires a prescription.
How It Works
Amoxicillin kills susceptible bacteria; clavulanic acid blocks resistance enzymes. The higher concentration allows dosing just twice a day.
Uses
Children's infections of the ear, sinuses, throat, chest, urinary tract and skin.
Dosage and Preparation
Reconstitute with cooled boiled water to the line and shake well. Given every 12 hours at the start of a meal, at a weight-based dose set by the doctor. Complete the full course. Store in the fridge after mixing and discard after 7 days. The 35ml bottle suits short courses or smaller children; a larger 70ml bottle is available.
Side Effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, rash and thrush. Get help for severe allergic reactions or bloody diarrhoea.
Precautions
Do not use in penicillin allergy or prior co-amoxiclav liver problems. Use the dosing syringe for accuracy.
