xWhat Is Augmentin DS Suspension 312.5mg/5ml?
Augmentin DS is GlaxoSmithKline's double-strength co-amoxiclav suspension (90ml). Each 5ml contains Amoxicillin 250mg and Clavulanic Acid 62.5mg. This medicine requires a prescription.
How It Works
Amoxicillin destroys bacterial cell walls and clavulanic acid inhibits the enzymes resistant bacteria use to inactivate penicillins.
Uses
Bacterial infections in children needing a higher dose per spoonful: otitis media, sinusitis, pneumonia, urinary and skin infections.
Dosage and Preparation
Reconstitute with boiled, cooled water to the line and shake before each dose. Usually given three times daily at the start of meals, with the dose calculated from body weight. Never switch between DS and the standard Augmentin 156.25mg/5ml without checking the dose. Keep refrigerated and use within 7 days.
Side Effects
Loose stools, nausea, vomiting, skin rash and thrush. Seek urgent care for allergic reactions or severe diarrhoea.
Precautions
Avoid in penicillin allergy or prior co-amoxiclav-related jaundice; caution in kidney or liver impairment.
